A deadlock is a high security lock used to secure an external door to your home or business. There are 2 main types of deadlocks: deadbolts and deadlatches. Our expert locksmiths will come to you and recommend the best deadlocks for your doors, taking into account your individual security needs.
A deadlock is often paired with an entrance lockset to create a secure and easy to use entry door. We can install a new deadbolt that matches your existing front door key, which improves security without increasing the number of keys you need to carry around.
Security is important, which is why we only work with the industry’s leading and most trusted brands and suppliers. We stand behind the quality locks we supply, and guarantee all of our work and products for a minimum of 2 years.
Single-sided vs double-sided deadbolt
Standard deadbolts usually come in a single or double configuration.
Single-sided deadlocks have a key on the outside and a turn handle on the inside, allowing for an easy exit.
Double-sided deadlocks use a key to operate both sides of the door. This is ideal if there are windows near the lock as it secures the door from both sides.
A single and double deadbolt from the same range use the same locking bolt for security. The only difference is how the lock is operated on the inside of the door (a turn handle vs key).
Deadlatch vs deadbolt
A deadbolt is a high security lock where a solid bolt locks into the doorframe. To lock the deadbolt, you need to physically lock the bolt with a key or turn handles. These are best suited to standard hinged entry doors. Deadbolts are not suitable for fire rated doors.
A deadlatch is a lock that deadlocks automatically when you close the door. The Lockwood 001 is the most popular lock in the deadlatch category. An approved deadlatch is the only suitable deadlocking option available for installation on fire-rated doors.
Deadlocks on fire rated doors
Fire rated doors are special doors that are designed to suppress the movement of fire within a building. Most entry doors in apartment buildings in Canberra are fire doors.
There are strict laws around fire doors and the locks you can install. The Lockwood 001 Deadlatch is a high security lock which is the only deadlock allowed to be installed onto a fire door.
It’s best to have an expert install hardware on a fire door as doing the wrong thing can result in having to replace an expensive fire door.
